Every cookie this site sets, what each one is for, and what Google's advertising adds on top.
This site sets nothing of its own. Browsing without signing in stores no cookie the publication controls, and sends nothing about you to the publisher.
Google is the exception, and it is not a small one: its advertising script runs on every public page and may set cookies of its own. See Advertising below.
A session cookie. It keeps you signed in as you move between pages, and it is removed when you sign out. It exists only to recognise your own session, is not shared with anyone, and is not used to follow you anywhere.
Two small preferences live in your browser rather than in a cookie, which means they are never transmitted to the server and never leave your device.
Your theme. Whether you chose the light or dark page.
Your reading list. The stories you saved. Saving is entirely local, which is why a saved story does not follow you to another device, and why we cannot see what you saved.
There is no analytics product. Nothing counts your visits, and no dashboard anywhere records what you read.
Advertising is a different matter. Google AdSense loads on the public pages, and Google and its partners may set cookies from their own domains to measure advertising and to choose which advertisements to show, personalised ones included. No advertisement is being served yet — the slots remain reserved empty space while the account is under review — but the script runs regardless.
Those cookies are Google’s, not this site’s, which is why they cannot be listed here the way the ones above are: Google sets them, names them, decides how long they last, and changes that set without reference to this publication. What Google does with them is described in how Google uses information from partner sites, and personalised advertising can be switched off at Google My Ad Center.
If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you are asked before any of those cookies are set. Google’s Consent Management Platform collects that consent and stores your answer, and you can reopen the consent banner to change your choices at any time.
None of this site’s own cookies is used for tracking, so you can clear cookies and site data for The Meridian at any time without breaking anything. You will be signed out, the page will go back to its light theme, and your saved reading list will be gone. Nothing else changes. Google’s advertising cookies clear the same way, and clearing them breaks nothing here either.
