President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced what he described as an unprecedented U.S. economic campaign against Iran, warning that any country helping Tehran evade the pressure could face severe economic consequences.
Trump characterized the operation as an "economic D-Day", declaring that the United States would pursue sweeping measures aimed at isolating Iran from the global financial system.
"Today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He warned that nations allowing financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities to provide Iran with what he called a "lifeline" could also face significant economic repercussions.
Trump specifically pointed to alleged avenues of support including oil smuggling, financial transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies.
"Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW," Trump wrote.
The president also called on U.S. allies to join Washington in isolating Iran, arguing that the measures are intended to severely restrict Tehran's ability to finance and project what he described as terrorism around the world.
"You know who you are," Trump warned countries that may be assisting Iran.
Trump's announcement represents a major escalation in economic pressure against Tehran, with the administration signaling that countries and entities that help Iran circumvent U.S. restrictions could themselves become targets of Washington's economic policy.
